Life Story

John was born in Enniskillen Co. Fermanagh at 8 Waterside Street to John (Gunner) Hanley and May Hanley nee Irvine on the 7th April 1938.

His father left for WW2 in 1939 and John moved to, 2 Eden Cottages on the shore Road with his mother and Grand parents Annie and Charles this was across from the Broad meadow. John was a keen fisherman and fished Lough Erne on every occasion he could to the point he used to bunk off school to do so. And was frequently in trouble by the school.

John joined the Royal Air Force in 1956 and commenced his career in the RAF Fire Service until he retired in 1993 at the age of 55. During his career he served all around the world including; Singapore, Gibraltar, Germany, Sharjah, Masirah and numerous posting in the UK.

John and Helen have four children, David (1962), Johnny (1963), Jacquline (1964) and lastly Sharon (1967). John and Helen's family has grown over the years as
David has two children and two grand children,
Johnny has three children,
Jacquline has four children and three grand children,
sharon has four children, in total they have thirteen grand children and five great grand children and one on the way.

John retired form the RAF while stationed at RAF Coltishall and moved back to his native Ireland and built his dream house for Helen and himself. After ten years his itchy feet got the better of him and returned to England to be closer to his ever growing family.

John and Helen had itchy feet once again and moved to Lincoln in 2007, where he started his numerous building projects.

John was the Member Secretary for the RAF Fire Service Association since 2005 and attended many of the association reunions for the biannual beer call.

John fell ill with hip pain in early September 2011 on which after visiting the Hospital found out that he had developed cancer.

John died peacefully in the early hours after a day surrounded by his wife and children and grandchildren.

RIP John Joseph Hanley

John Hanley (Flashpoint)  from George Edwards

Submitted by David Hanley and behalf of Mr Edwards.

My name is George Edwards,

I am along with Steve joint editor of the RAF Fire Service Magazine Flashpoint.

John sent me many months ago a article for Flashpoint chronicling his early life and his career in the RAF Fire Service. it is a beautiful story of a devoted family man a proud dad granddad and great granddad . His RAF story is also very interesting and will bring great pleasure to many of Johns ex colleagues who remember John with great affection.

I never had the pleasure of serving with John I served at some of the bases he did including Masirah and Sharjah what fun it would have been to be stationed with John as many of my colleagues tell me he was a great man to work for and with. However I did serve with John on our Association committee and he did his job with great diligence and was always willing to help other committee members. I enjoyed a wonderful reunion trip to RAF Gutersloh some years ago with John and we spent a lot of time together.

The fun banter and laughter was marvellous the bad heads weren’t so good but worth it and the memory of that long weekend in Johns company has never faded It must be a comfort for you Helen and your family to know that Johns last days were peaceful full of joy and laughter .I am sure when he arrives at the place where he has gone there will be even more rejoicing when he meets up with some of those old colleagues who went before him and held him in such high regard and esteem.

I am sure John will be making the point that it is their turn to get the drinks in. With your permission Helen, Steve and I would like to include Johns story in the next edition of Flashpoint not as a obituary notice but more of a tribute to the great man he was.

As a practising Roman Catholic one can only hope and pray that God in his mercy and kindness can led us to his kingdom and what a blessing it must have been for those close to John as he departed this world and entered the Kingdom of Heaven.

Yours sincerely

George Edwards
