Life Story

Bernie is survived by her heartbroken husband, Kevin Breen, by her two sons Kevin and Eamonn Breen and her daughters Sarah Sweeney and Niamh Breen, her three sisters, two brothers, brothers and sisters in law, nephews, nieces, and by relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Maureen Maguire in 2005 and Philip Maguire in 1994. Having reposed at her residence, Bernie’s remains were taken to St. Mary’s Church where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr. Garrett Campbell who created and delivered a beautiful eulogy. Fr. Eugene Sweeney, Fr. Michael Hickey and Fr. Malachy Conlon were also present.

Bernie was born in the Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda on 28th February 1958. She lived in Ardee until the age of 17 when she moved to Portrane to train in St. Ita’s Hospital as a psychiatric nurse. She qualified three years later and moved to Birmingham to continue her studies. She married Kevin Breen in 1981 and moved to Benagh. It was there that they raised their four children.

As well as working in the Moorings as a psychiatric nurse in Dundalk, she looked after the family home and had a great interest in her garden and animals, devoting much time to looking after her flowers, vegetables, hens and ducks. She loved to travel and particularly enjoyed holidaying in France. She travelled extensively taking in China, New Zealand, America and many other places. A very independent lady, Bernie took a great interest in her children ensuring they learned how to swim, play the piano and encouraged them to study and travel.

The Readings were given by nieces Eimhear and Áine Breen, while the Prayers of Intercession were led by Eamonn and Sarah, nieces and nephews. The reflection was beautifully read by her daughter Niamh.

The Offertory Gifts were presented by her daughter Sarah and nephew Cathal Grogan. The Gifts that symbolised Bernie’s life were presented by her sons Kevin and Eamonn, daughter Niamh and friend Melissa Cumiskey. The beautiful music was provided by the Bush Post Primary School Choir.

After Mass burial took place in St. Mary’s cemetery, Lordship.

Month's Mind Mass will be held on October 29th in St. Mary’s Church, Lordship at 11am.

Shared Memories

Bernie and me  from Rosaleen Carroll

Where do I start...I was cleaning out my room yesterday and I came across a diary that I wrote when I was 9 and the amount of entries I had about staying over in Bernies I might as well have been part of the family. :) And that's exactly how I felt with the warm welcome and loads of fun that Bernie always provided. Anyway back to my memories of sleep overs. Every morning after a sleepless night of chatting with Sarah about what boys we fancied and our next greatest plan, we'd go downstairs for breakfast, which would consist of Sarah running away from Bernie and the dreaded brush whilst I waited eagerly to get one of Bernies famous french plats. As I read in my diary yesterday, "Stayed in Sarah's last night and Bernie did a french plat in my hair,". Now there was a lot of spelling mistakes. Then there was the thrill of asking the parents if we could stay over in each other's houses. :)
Then there was the walks round the block and over to Carlingford and Bernie would come and collect us thank god. :) Then she'd treat us to a 99.
When we got older Bernie always wanted to know the story about our love lives and I had plenty of disasters. There was the getting ready before we headed out. The chat the next day with a cuppa.
She will be sadly missed and she will always have a special place in my heart.
